Music RelatedMusic is one of the things that I enjoy the most, and I like a lot of different styles. But here are some sites that keep my attention... GENERAL:All Music Guide -- One of the most comprehensive and best online critical music source around. Trouser Press -- They're baaaack. They've got a new site up and running, and it looks good. Magnet Magazine -- Pretty good mag for indie rock, etc. The Big Takeover Magazine -- Huge bi-annual mag for indie rock, etc. CMJ (College Music Journal) -- They've got a nice new site. Grunnen Rocks -- Cool "encylopedia"-like site of punk and trash rock. insound -- This is a place to buy indie, punk, electronica, and other underground/semi-underground styles. Pitchfork -- A music site. The Covers Project -- "We're building a database of cover songs with the intention of creating cover "chains." A cover chain is a set of songs in which each song is a cover of a song by the band who covered the preceding song." CLUB SITES (IN D.C.):Nightclub 9:30 -- Probably the premier club in DC, shows range from Toots & the Maytals to Motorhead. The Black Cat -- The place to see up-and-coming and/or more esoteric bands. Ft. Reno -- A park in Tenleytown where you can catch free outdoor shows during the summer. Pheer.com -- Show listing for DC, MD, and VA. Ottobar -- Cool Baltimore bar/club. BAND SITES:
LABEL SITES:Captain Oi Records -- This label is reissuing some old Brit-punk, including a lot of UK Subs. Dischord -- 20 years old... nice site, too. Epitaph is pretty much the standard bearer of new punk. Estrus -- Home to bands like Man...or Astro-Man?, The Mono Men, and others. Fistful of Rock n Roll -- This is a cool series documenting all sorts of current "punk 'n' roll" bands. Lookout! -- Original home to Green Day and The Donnas, they have stuff in the same vein as those two bands. Matador Records are almost the definition of indie rock, I guess. Rhino Records -- One of the coolest labels around. Tons of reissues and the best compilations ever. Time Bomb Records has a lot of new and old punk/rockabilly stuff, mostly SoCal. OTHER COOL STUFF:CDR FAQ: I thought this was helpful. Lots o' info. The Experience Music Project in Seattle has a well done punk chronology. Gearhead Magazine has a really cool new site for car nuts and punks alike GEMM -- If you're looking for hard-to-find vinyl, imports, or CDs, take a look at this. It's a massive database for all kinds of vendors around the world. Junkrock.com -- Just like the name says. Lester Bangs Bio -- a great rock-n-roll writer. World Wide Retro -- A huge site for all things retro: music, clothes, etc. Garage Punk Rock 'n' Roll Topsites -- This is a like a Web ring for garage, punk, and RnR sites. |
